Jackson Hole Outgrows Its Tiny, Busy Airport
Card Consolidation Credit Debt The Jackson Hole Airport is the only airport in the country entirely within a national park. It is high season here now, and that means that aircraft, from private seven-seaters to commercial 757's, are touching down at a regular clip.
Jackson Hole, to borrow the Wyoming state motto, is "like no place on earth." As part of the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48 states, Jackson Hole's spectacular scenery, pristine environment and proximity to Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks make Jackson Hole the perfect playground for some of the best rivers, abundant streams, scenic corridors, and wildlife viewing in North America. The 24, acre National Elk Refuge is located just North of Jackson and in the winters, a herd of over 7, 500 elk migrate here for food.
Most visitors to Chicago land at O'Hare International Airport, one of the world's busiest airports.
Merchant Credit Guide Co Jackson, Wyo. In the alpine splendor of the Teton range, where crickets flitter across the trails and fish splash around the Snake River, another, less natural, sound is never far away the mechanical buzz of airplanes ferrying people in and out of this enclave for the rich and famous.

By Card Credit Debt Debt Guide Perhaps more than is the case in most cities, in Jackson, the airport is central to economic vitality. The town's spurt in growth parallels the introduction of jet service here in the early 1980's. Yet the airport, a low-slung affair with peaked roof lines evoking the jagged-edge mountains that stagger up behind it, remains one of the nation's tiniest. Experts say the runway, at 6,305 feet, is among the shortest in use at commercial airports.
London Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the UK and the third busiest airport in the world by total passenger traffic. Not to worry though as all the services you need to make your arrival stress free are at hand. There are clear signs directing you to passport control, baggage reclaim and customs and then through to local transport links, other terminals and the airport car parks.
Credit Repair But because it is located within the Grand Teton National Park, the National Park Service has restricted the runway's extension. So while Jackson Hole, the valley that includes Jackson and covers much of the county, is growing and developing largely because of its airport, the airport cannot grow along with it.
Active Credit Credit Guide That has caused tensions between the many residents whose livelihoods depend on tourists including some business owners who would welcome expansion and those who worry that the rapid growth could ruin the very appeal that draws people here in the first place. Already, the surge in affluence that the airport has made possible dramatizes the rift between the growing rich, many of whom own second homes here, and the local work force, who cannot afford to live here.
Credit Score All this has not stopped the traffic. Private planes swarm the tarmac in a constant procession. Because Vice President Dick Cheney is vacationing at his home here for the month of August, Air Force Two is frequently in and out, backing up planes because the airspace must be secured.
Bad Car Credit Guide Loan Even more activity is promised by mid-December, as local businesses here start to subsidize several major airlines to the tune of $1.3 million to guarantee nonstop service from some of the country's biggest airports, including those that serve New York, Chicago and Atlanta. There is only limited nonstop service now.
Bad Credit Loan After hearing a presentation from George Larson, Jackson's airport manager, about new security measures that will require passengers to arrive two hours before their flights, Jerry DeFrance, president of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, was not terribly upset.
Credit Definition Derivative "Our problems are born of success, and those are a lot better than problems born of failure," he said. "A lot of communities would like to have our problems."
Bad Credit Mortgage But there is rising concern here that unless these problems are managed, that success could turn sour.
The Insider Guide To Credit "It raises questions when the community is pitching in $1.3 million to bring more people," said Carl Schneebech, a specialist in public land for the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance. "At some point, are we killing the goose that is laying the golden egg?"
Business Credit Card The boom here began in the mid-1980's, when jet service began. Since then, the population has doubled, to 18,000 in 2000, up from 9,000 in 1980.
Banker Complete Credit Guide The Chamber of Commerce has even produced a graph that shows a happy correlation between the per capita income of residents and the level of jet service. Per capita income was relatively steady in Jackson Hole until 1984. As more planes began arriving, it soared, from less than $20,000 in 1984 to more than $67,000 today more than triple the national average. Now, Teton County, which includes Jackson Hole, is the nation's richest, ahead of even Fairfield County, Conn., at $50,000.
Credit Card Application Yet Jackson Hole's airfield, which began as an unpaved strip in 1930, remains modest. When Congress designated the surrounding Grand Tetons a national park in 1950, constraints were placed on the airfield, which was not paved until 1959. Pilots periodically overshoot the runway, as one did a few years ago in the middle of the night in a plane flying the actress Sandra Bullock.
Credit Guide Managing While there has been talk over the years of extending the runway, a 50-year agreement struck in 1983 between the airport and the park restricts such expansions. In addition, many residents object to a longer runway, saying it would invite bigger jets, which would create more noise.
Credit Card Offer Could the airport move out of the park, to where its runway could be longer? That is not likely. Land values here are exorbitant. A full 97 percent of the land is in government hands, and the remaining 3 percent is tightly held.
Merchant Credit Guide Company To move the airport but keep it in Teton County would mean moving it farther south, away from the national park, but the valley becomes narrower and more populated, making air traffic more dangerous. This has led some to suggest moving it over the mountains to Idaho, but Jackson Hole is not about to let that happen.
Bad Credit The real problem, to many here, is the abundance of private air service. Because of poor air service in the past, even the less-than-rich buy into time-shares on private jets. As recently as 1999, about 5,250 private planes landed here per year. By 2001, that number had climbed to 13,100.
Collection Collection Complete Town leaders, unhappy about the noise, are irked at the Federal Aviation Administration for failing to regulate the private planes. There are no curfews on them, as there are on commercial jets, and no limit on their number or flight paths.
Credit Counseling The federal agency maintains that banning private aircraft would be discriminatory.
Complete Credit Guide Higher Tony Jewett, director of the Northern Rockies regional office of the National Parks and Conservation Association, said owners of private airplanes represented a powerful lobby.
Chase Credit Card "The fact that Jackson is in this explosive growth stage and a huge number of people moving to Jackson are people of means and have fairly snapshot lifestyles where they have to get in and out of places quickly," Mr. Jewett said, "means there is a lot of economic pressure to accommodate them."
Complete Credit Guide Hedging He added, "But this means that anyone visiting the park has constant visual intrusions, with flight patterns right across the park, and noise intrusions, which interrupt one of the great park values, which is the natural sound-scape."
Bad Credit Home Loan But even park officials recognize the value of the airport to the local economy as well as the necessity for safety. As a result, they have not objected to night lights and a small tower, which controls air traffic.
Bad Credit Personal Loan Jonathan Schechter, executive director of the Charture Institute, which studies issues of growth and change in places of ecological significance, said there was no direct cause and effect between airplane business and income even though he created the graph comparing the two. But he said that better air service not only brought in more tourists but, combined with Wyoming's lack of an income tax, made Jackson Hole more attractive to people with the means to live anywhere.
Credit Score Guide Mr. Schechter said that their wealth has in turn made Jackson Hole less reliant on tourism. Over the last 10 years, white-collar jobs in finance, real estate, medicine and law have generated more income here than tourism. Financial services and investments account for more of residents' income than tourism and white-collar jobs combined.
Online Credit Report But Bill Collins, director of planning and development for Teton County, said that two-thirds of the labor force made less than $30,000 a year, and most of these workers could not afford to live here. The median price of a single-family home is $560,000, twice the national average. "An economic polarization is occurring here," Mr. Collins said.
Credit Guide Still, many businesses here are built on tourism, and business owners say it is essential to attract more tourists, particularly as the ski industry consolidates and shrinks.
Bad Credit Debt Consolidation Jerry Blann, president of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, has been one of the main business organizers of the new contracts with the airlines, an arrangement found in other wealthy resorts, like Aspen and Vail. He is putting up $200,000 of the total $1.3 million to guarantee cash to Delta, United, Northwest and Continental to fly here nonstop. American is also servicing Jackson Hole but is doing so without a contract.
Credit Guide Process Mike Gierau, owner of Jedediah's restaurant, is putting up $1,800.
Online Credit Card Application "There are 35 Realtors within a fork's throw of where we are now," Mr. Gierau said enthusiastically. "They're selling property to people who are buying plane tickets. And one reasons it's easier for them to sell property is because people can come here, especially if you have service from places like New York. Second-home-owners are going ga-ga over this."
Boston Credit First Guide Still, he has to compete for their business with his fellow restaurateurs. Because of that, he said, he is still hedging his bets.
Credit Card Debt "I give the pilots free breakfast," he said, laughing. "And many a time I've flown in and on final approach they'll say, `Boy, if you get a chance, eat at Jedediah's. It's an awful nice place.' "
