Establishing a good credit history is more important than ever. Qualifying for mortgages, auto loans, apartments, and even jobs have become dependent to some degree on your credit history. So graduating from college without any or just a little credit is bound to be rough at first. Ironically, the worried students who heeded the ominous warnings about signing up for a credit card may have a much harder time than their former credit card carrying classmates in establishing their credit (assuming their peers didn t rake up hefty sums in credit card debt). Building credit after graduation may also be tougher because credit card companies may no longer assume your parents will pick up the bill. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to build credit after college. Here are some things to consider: card consolidation credit debt

Consolidate your student loans, so you have one monthly payment, and make all your payments on time! Timely loan payments are the best way to build a good credit history. Need to Know Where Your Credit Stands Order Now Order Your 3 Bureau Credit Report with Creditor Addresses Apply for a gas or department store charge card. These credit lines may be easier to qualify for than major credit cards, and most report to the national credit bureaus. However, before applying for a department store, gas, or even a major credit card, make sure the company reports to the major credit bureaus. There s no point maintaining a charge card if it won t be reflected in your credit report. credit union

Because you often need credit to build credit, obtaining major credit cards can be tough. One option is to open a secured credit card account. A secured credit card requires you to deposit and maintain money in a savings account for security. The required deposit and APR vary by credit card company; interest rates can be anywhere from 10% to 25%. merchant credit guide co

High rates are a fact of life when you have little or no credit. With no credit history, lenders and creditors will treat you as high risk, which means high interest rates until you establish good credit. apply online for credit card

Once you qualify for your own credit card, use it, but make sure you always pay off your credit card bill on time. A late payment of even 30 days can show on your credit report for up to 7 years. by card credit debt debt guide

Try not to exceed 30% of your credit card s credit limit. Large credit balances can cause your credit score to drop. Credit scores are statistical scores based on your credit report that predict the probability of your defaulting on your credit obligation. A good credit score can be helpful to obtain more credit when you need it and at a lower interest rate. credit repair

Some financial advisors suggest taking out a small installment loan, for example an auto loan, to help establish your credit history. Again make sure the lender will report your credit history to a credit bureau, and remember that in order for the loan to reflect positively on your credit report, always pay your bills on time! Late payments equal derogatory information on your credit report and may lower your credit score. Again, a timely payment history is the best way to prove you are responsible with credit. active credit credit guide

If you do not qualify for a loan by yourself, or you simply want lower interest rates, consider having a close friend or parent with established credit co-sign a loan with you. Paying your bills on time will be even more important with a co-signer, because your payment history will now appear on their credit report as well as your own. credit score

Only apply for one credit card at a time. Each time you apply for credit, creditors may pull a copy of your credit report. This is recorded at the credit bureaus in your credit file as an inquiry . Too many inquiries can hurt your credit score. bad car credit guide loan

Numerous accounts are not needed to build good credit. A few strong credit lines, like a major credit card (a revolving account) and an auto loan (an installment account), may be enough to get you started. bad credit loan

In summary, be careful with credit. Approach it prudently. Apply for a little at a time; only enough so you can control it, not the other way around. Keep in mind that if you are not careful, too much debt can easily become a depressing financial burden instead of a useful tool to enrich your life. It s your choice. Good luck! credit definition derivative

Vantage Score (sm) Credit Score from Equifax, Experian and Trans Union New standard credit score from the 3 national credit bureaus. credit score scores scoring vantage score equifax, experian, transunion standard credit report VantageScore (sm) Credit Score from Equifax, Experian and Trans Union What s the new credit score called the VantageScore(sm)

The 3 national credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union) have recently announced a joint venture to produce a new credit score for businesses and consumers called the VantageScore(sm). The three credit bureaus compete with each other in providing credit report and associated products to consumers and businesses alike. The VantageScore (sm) marks the first time the three systems have joined forces to produce a scoring model that scores consumers across all three companies. business credit card

The new credit score is expected to compete in the marketplace with such products as the FICO (sm) Score from Fair Issac and Companies. FICO scores have long dominated the credit scoring industry and are the most recognized scores used in transactions such as home mortgages and home refinancing. The new VantageScore (sm) should be available to businesses immediately and rolled out to consumers later this year. banker complete credit guide

The new score will have a score range of 501 to 990. The higher the score the more creditworthy the applicant because a higher score theoretically predicts the applicant has a lower risk of default in a financial transaction. credit card application

The VantageScore (sm) will use the same scoring criteria across all three national credit bureau systems. The result should make scores across credit bureaus more consistent and less variable. However, there will still be differences in your credit score from one bureau to the next if your credit data in one bureau is different from the other credit bureau. That happens even though the scoring algorithm will be the same. credit guide managing

The VantageScore (sm) has been constructed after review of the credit histories from 15 million sample credit files from each credit bureau. Generally that means the score developers look at the credit report attributes in a consumer s credit file at a point in time and look at it again some time later and see if there has been a serious default in the credit history. By looking at the factors before and after a default, the score developer can statistically measure the factors that may have predicted the default. The end result is a statistical measure of the risk of a consumer defaulting on a financial obligation. It does mean the consumer will default. It only means a consumer with a lower credit score has a higher probability of defaulting. credit card offer

The new score is also advertised to be more predictive for consumers with limited credit data on file at the credit bureaus. Such thin-file consumers with limited credit histories have been difficult to score in the past. The new score should therefore help consumers with a limited credit history to at least be scorable. merchant credit guide company

standard credit report Authorized Users Does It Help Your Credit Score

Authorized users are those credit card holders who have the ability to use a particular credit card, but who are not liable for the payment of any charges on the card. the best credit card

Parents, for example, have frequently added their family members on their credit cards as authorized users. That way the parent could provide their son or daughter with a credit card for emergency purposes but without the legal responsibility for the monthly bill because the parent remained legally responsible for the credit use and resulting payment obligation. business to business credit

Additionally credit scoring systems such as Fair Issac (FICO) did not treat authorized user accounts separately when computing the credit score, so the son or daughter would inherit, so to speak, the favorable credit history of the parent. The result could be that even kids with limited credit experience who were authorized users with good credit parents might now have a strong FICO score. Of course, the reverse was also true, and many authorized users could inherit the bad credit from the parent, lowering their score. credit card debt consolidation

Unfortunately, the practice of setting up authorized users got out of hand to the point where credit repair companies began selling favorable authorized user credit account histories on the Internet in an effort to inflate people s credit scores. According to some reports there was such misuse on the Internet that a card holder with a good payment history could add literally twenty+ unrelated people as authorized users to their account. Of course the motivation for the card holder was profit. For the authorized user, the benefit was enough of a lift to their credit score to qualify for new loans and better payment terms. travel reward credit card

Fair Isaac (FICO) finally recognized the abuses of the practice recently and adjusted their credit score algorithm (the set of rules FICO uses to score credit reports) to ignore authorized user accounts. The result is that generally credit scores will no longer be inflated by authorized user accounts. Good news for lenders who do not want credit scores artificially manipulated. Bad news for legitimate authorized users who may have benefited somewhat from their parents good credit habits. credit bureau

Really though the original intent of the authorized user practice still works fine. It just won t affect credit scores like it did before, but it can still provide a credit card to those who might not otherwise qualify for one. bad credit car loan

If you really want the credit score effect, you will have to add the former authorized users as a co-signer on the card. If that is not permitted, then consider getting a secured card for the person. Be sure to choose a secured card company that reports payment history to at least one of the three national credit bureaus so it will be a factor used in computing the person s credit score. consumer credit counseling
