Bug Off

Bug Off

Author: Gary P. Joyce
It's a fact of life: If you're in the tropics anywhere, you're going to have to deal with all manner of (usually) small, biting critters. Here's something that I've been using for quite some time in several different tropical ecosystems, and it's worked absolutely better than anything. It's called HourGuard 12 (2-ounce cream dispenser) or HourGuard 8 (9-ounce spray), and you can only get it from your local Amway dealer (check your White Pages). I keep the spray in my car for sojourns to local beaches but always carry the cream when traveling. It's DEET-based (if that bothers you, well, enjoy being lunch), water and sweat barely affect it, it doesn't smell, and it isn't greasy. If you can't find a local rep, call Amway at 800-544-7167. This stuff blows away everything else I've used (including that military stuff we used to mix with peanut butter and cook with). Jungle and swamp 'skeeters, white-sand-beach no-see-ums, Maine spring-hatch black flies, Fire Island green flies, deer ticks ... begone. I swear by this stuff.
