Rowland Urges Defeat Of Energy Bill
Card Consolidation Credit Debt Gov. John G. Rowland entreated Connecticut's congressional delegation Tuesday to vote against the massive energy bill moving through Congress this week, saying that unless last-minute provisions were removed, the bill could overturn the state's sovereignty in controlling energy matters and have serious environmental consequences.
Energy retailers have urged customers to switch to Direct Debit after it was revealed the payment system can reduce people's energy bills.
Credit Union This is a very significant power grab, Rowland said, explaining that the bill could give federal regulators sole authority over gas pipelines and power lines in the states. It's really a states' rights issue versus a federal intervention issue.
"Scottish and Southern has announced plans to reward energy efficient customers. Through the scheme Scottish and Southern believe that the average household will be able to save 00 on their energy bills if they reduce their consumption of electricity and gas and invest in energy saving products. Any move to cut bills and greenhouse gases is welcome but we urge customers to look at all their options. Other providers offer similar incentive schemes and their tariffs may be cheaper.
Merchant Credit Guide Co Rowland held a press conference with Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and the state's Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner, Arthur J. Rocque, Tuesday afternoon. All three beseeched Connecticut lawmakers to vote against the bill and accused Congressional leaders of fiddling with the legislation in conference without any public oversight.
SimplySwitch.com is urging consumers to act now to ensure that they are on the best tariff available. All the major energy companies have now increased their prices in the last few months. The most recent was British Gas, up 12.4% for gas and 9.4% for electricity, adding 09 to the average bill. Prior to that EDF¯ bills rose 19% for gas and 8% for electricity, adding 35 to the average bill.

At home, these benefits include lower home energy bills, increased indoor comfort, and reduced air pollution. In addition to helping savvy consumers lower their energy bills at home, efficient products eligible for the new federal tax credits actually lower the amount of federal income taxes that these taxpayers must pay Uncle Sam.
By Card Credit Debt Debt Guide It's Congress at its worst. It's government at its worst, Rowland said.
More than 30% of consumers with estimated bills are being put at a disadvantage because energy suppliers continue to use old energy meters, according to consumer watchdog, energywatch.
Credit Repair Blumenthal called the bill a Christmas tree for energy-interest giveaways and said Tuesday his office was already preparing to fight the bill in court.
Active Credit Credit Guide The bill would prompt the most sweeping change of the country's energy policy in decades. It calls for billions of dollars in tax incentives for oil, coal and natural gas industries, and detractors say it does little to promote cleaner, more efficient energy sources.
Credit Score The bill moved through the House of Representatives Tuesday, where it passed by a vote of 246-180. It will likely move to the Senate this week, and Rowland has called on Connecticut senators Christopher J. Dodd and Joseph I. Lieberman to filibuster the bill.
Bad Car Credit Guide Loan U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, who voted in favor of the bill Tuesday, called it a critically important piece of legislation that will provide a strong comprehensive national energy policy that promotes conservation, alternative fuels and technologies, in conjunction with maintaining sound environmental practices.
Bad Credit Loan A staff member in Simmons' office said Tuesday the congressman's office was contacted by environmental officials here, but they were unable to change his vote. When the congressman looks at a bill he tries to weigh the pros and cons, said Meredith Elliott, his press secretary. He looks at the entirety of a bill and thinks we can address issues of concern in an individual matter.
Credit Definition Derivative The state's immediate concern, Rowland said, was a sentence in the bill allowing the Cross Sound Cable a 24-mile power line running under Long Island Sound from New Haven to New York to continue operating.
Bad Credit Mortgage The cable, which was built in 2002 but has not been authorized to run by state agencies because it wasn't properly buried, has been operating since this summer, when the August blackout prompted energy secretary Spencer Abraham to order its temporary start-up. After the crisis ended Abraham extended the order indefinitely, a move Connecticut immediately challenged.
The Insider Guide To Credit Another provision of the bill would allow a proposed gas pipeline, known as Islander East, to carry natural gas from Branford through four other Connecticut communities before crossing the Sound to Shoreham, N.Y. The DEP has said twice it won't allow construction of the pipeline because it could affect water quality, tidal wetlands and marine life, and is inconsistent with the state's federally approved Coastal Zone Management Program. Federal agencies have voiced their concern about the project as well, as have senators Dodd and Lieberman.
Business Credit Card State environment commissioner Rocque Tuesday called the energy bill 30 years of bad environmental management all rolled into one and said he expected to uncover more environmentally troubling provisions in the legislation as he and his staff combed through it.
Banker Complete Credit Guide The question remains, Rocque asked Tuesday, what else is there?
Credit Card Application Rocque cited two provisions that were particularly worrisome. One would exempt manufacturers of the gasoline additive MTBE, known to be a water pollutant, from legal liability in lawsuits. Another provision would postpone federal air pollution attainment standards to 2020.
Credit Guide Managing But the larger problem, Rowland, Blumenthal and Rocque stressed, was that Connecticut and all other states would no longer have control over any entity now overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which includes power lines running through the state and hydro-electric dams.
Credit Card Offer Rowland said Tuesday that state officials across the country would be powerless to stop construction of gas pipelines in their states if the legislation passes.
Merchant Credit Guide Company It would give dictatorial authority to one agency, which happens to be the agency most beholden to energy interests, Blumenthal said, adding, It dismembers a carefully balanced system of checks and balances.
